A dreamy trip in Essaouira
Renowned in Antiquity for its purple dye, in the 14th century Essaouira became a Portuguese trading post protected by ramparts and was known as Mogdura, meaning “well-guarded”, or Mogador by the Europeans. Spices, gold and sugar cane were among the many riches traded here. In the 18th century, a French architect and disciple of Vauban designed its port and Kasbah, hence the name Essaouira, meaning “beautifully designed”. Now a popular cultural destination and a kitesurfers’ paradise, the town is enjoying a tourist boom.
With the construction of the Sofitel Luxury Mogador by Bouygues Bâtiment International, the town has acquired a luxury complex of 145 rooms and 30 villas spread over 11 hectares, including a club-house, children’s club, disco, spa, fitness centre, golf course and more. All the villas, with a floor area of 136 m² each, have their own swimming pool, terrace, private garden… Just about everything you could possibly need for a dream holiday.
